Since November 2019 a large-scale and government-funded joint research project between Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), IAB Weimar gGmbH, GESO GmbH & Co. Projekt KG, DEEP.KBB GmbH and Rembe Consulting PartG mbB aims to locate and quantify very small leakages in borehole casings using fiber-optic measurement technologies.

Within the joint research project a combined measurement method will be developed to evaluate the conditions of deep boreholes uniting the advantages of fiber-optic temperature measurements with those of fiber-optic acoustic measurements. With the help of this newly developed measuring and evaluation method, a fiber optic cable inserted into the cased borehole is intended to make leakages clearly identifiable und quantifiable in their order of magnitude using an appropriate stimulation method. By combining the measurement data and eliminating the disadvantages caused by the movement of a measuring probe, more precise results for the evaluation of the borehole integrity are expected.

Once a simple and robust technology has been developed the goal is to provide quantitative statements about the conditions in the cased borehole directly at the well site. To implement this project, numerical calculations as well as a borehole simulator will be used to enable complex investigations.
